Name: Andy Bechtel From: UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States About me: I teach editing and writing at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at UNC-Chapel Hill. I'm interested in new ways to tell news stories and in the ethical and political ramifications of word choices (terrorist surveillance program, domestic spying or something in between?).
I have 12 years of experience in newspaper editing, most recently at The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C.
John Edwards' presidential campaign, perhaps inspired by this report, has created this video to complain about how the media have turned the Democratic race into a two-person contest. Edwards isn't one of the two people. If he were, this video wouldn't exist.
The video is interesting to editing types in that it makes prominent use of newspaper and Web headlines to make its point, followed by clips from cable TV news.
As a Ron Paul supporter I can totally empathize with the Edwards campaign. Traditional mass media outlets have almost completely disregarded Paul's bid for the presidency despite his popularity on the web.
While Paul continues to win more electorates in the primaries and generate more fund raising dollars than Thompson and Giuliani, the media continues to portray Fred and Rudy as legit contenders while disregarding Paul as a hopeless outsider. Pathetic.
